AI and the Revitalized Church

Season #4

One in three Americans now say they'd trust AI's spiritual guidance as much as their pastor's. Among practicing Christians, that number is a third. Among Millennials, almost half. Only twelve percent of pastors feel ready to even talk about it.

In this episode, Gary breaks down what's happening inside our people's minds and inside our churches as AI becomes a daily spiritual companion for millions of Christians.

He walks through the MIT study that tracked brain activity in real time and found a measurable cost to letting AI think for us, what researchers call cognitive debt. He unpacks the neuroscience of the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex, the brain's alarm system and its judge, and what happens to both under heavy AI and screen use. Then he flips the script: the same research shows prayer and sustained attention build the exact brain function AI erodes.

From there, Gary connects it to a mistake he's seen kill more revitalization efforts than slow decline ever has. Drawing on neuroscientist Iain McGilchrist's research and Harvard professor Arthur Brooks' teaching on it, Gary shows why declining churches keep reaching for complicated fixes, new programs, new systems, new hires, when the real problem is complex: broken trust, an unnamed identity, ungrieved loss. AI is remarkable at complicated. It cannot touch complex. And a leadership team that skips straight to action without doing the relational work first gets a fast, confident fix for the wrong problem.

Gary closes with five moves any church can make by Sunday, including one built specifically for leaders carrying a turnaround on a small, exhausted team.
